Chai Tea

Another one that makes me happy! And it was fun to do, too. I decided to do iced chai to throw some variety into my series--there may be another couple of iced teas on the way...But since iced chai lattes are such a hip thing I made my tea girl a fashionable hijabi shopping on a summer afternoon. I really love images of fashionable hijabis on Tumblr--their outfits are so classy and flowy. The lighting and color was strongly influenced by the work of the amazing Pascal Campion!

Anyway, chai tea originates from India (where there is a substantial Muslim population, which was part of the inspiration for this drawing) and is actually a mix of black tea (like Assam with milk, sugar or honey, and spices like cardamom, cinnamon and cloves. I have tried the traditional chai a few times before--it is very spicy and fragrant with cinnamon; a great tea for winter. However, in recent years, chai has become more popular in the west as creamy lattes and cappucinos--these are very milky and sweet. I personally prefer iced chai lattes. They may be less authentic but they are so refreshing and creamy!
